Improve HD I/O performance

You're better off switching your system to the Network Server role--no matter how you use your machine.

  • Right-click on My Computer and select Properties, Performance, and click on File System. Make sure the Hard Disk tab is selected. Change the Typical Role of This Machine to Network Server. While you're at it, you should also change the Read-Ahead Optimization setting to Full.
  • If you're running a pre-OSR2 version of Windows 95, however, you'll have to make a quick Registry switch before you change the role of your PC in order to enjoy better performance. Start the Registry Editor (click on Start, then Run, type in regedit, and click on OK).
    Find the Key:
    HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\FSTemplates\Server\NameCache.
Change the value to a9 0a 00 00. Change the \PathCache value to 40 00 00 00. You're switching these values to fix a bug that initially reversed them.
